The Learning Centre for Quality Management (LCQM) is a regional hub for excellence, established to enhance healthcare systems in Southern Africa. Focused on improving quality healthcare delivery, LCQM promotes evidence-based practices through capacity building, research, and knowledge management. The Centre collaborates with local and international partners to foster a sustainable, people-centered approach to healthcare, addressing key challenges in health systems and driving impactful solutions across the region.
OUR VISION:
To be the Centre of excellence in the Southern African region, facilitating comprehensive learning within the healthcare system to enhance the delivery of quality healthcare.
OUR MISSION:
To facilitate learning through knowledge management, research, and capacity building with the aim of enhancing evidence – based practice.
OUR PILLARS
Knowledge Management
The Knowledge Management Pillar plays a crucial role in driving systematic learning and documentation of lessons from implementation experiences, which can be scaled up to enhance the quality of healthcare.
Comprising three dynamic departments: Learning & Documentation, Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E), and Digital, this pillar ensures that knowledge is not only captured but also effectively utilized for sustainable impact. The Learning & Documentation team leads the process of gathering lessons and experiences from implementation transforming insights into actionable recommendations for national scale-up.
The M&E Department ensures accountability and progress tracking by coordinating the reporting of all activities at the Centre, aligning efforts with the Centre’s vision of excellence. The M&E unit is also involved in supporting the Ministry of Health in implementing the Health Sector Strategic Plan 3 (HSSP III) M&E framework. Meanwhile, the Digital Department leads the development of innovative digital tools that enhance learning and knowledge management, making knowledge more efficient and accessible.
Together, these teams form a powerhouse of knowledge creation and dissemination, strengthening the healthcare system in Malawi and the Southern African Region. By integrating learning, data-driven decision-making, and digital transformation, the Knowledge Management Pillar is at the forefront of advancing quality healthcare delivery, ensuring that knowledge is not just stored but actively applied to drive real change.
Capacity Building
The Capacity Building Pillar is one of the key focus areas at the Learning Center, with the primary goal of conducting capacity-building efforts that respond directly to the healthcare system’s needs. The pillar focuses on:-
1. Ensuring Effective Skill Application
Emphasising teaching skills that can be practically applied, making capacity-building initiatives both impactful and effective.
2. Experiential Learning
Moving beyond theoretical teaching approaches by mentoring two Quality Improvement model hospitals. These hospitals will serve as training centres where trainees and students will engage with real-world Quality Improvement initiatives, gaining hands-on experience and insights.
3. E-Learning Integration
Expanding access to Continuous Professional Development (CPD) through e-learning and virtual reality
Currently, the Capacity Building Pillar has developed a pre-service and in-service Quality Improvement curriculum and is in the process of transforming these training materials into e-learning materials. The pillar also mentors Machinga District Hospital and Kabudula Community Hospital in Quality Improvement, and supports their resource mobilisation efforts.
Research and Development
The Research Pillar drives innovation and evidence generation to improve health systems and inform policy in Malawi and beyond. Our work focuses on leveraging data to identify gaps, evaluate interventions, and deliver actionable insights for better healthcare outcomes.
Currently, we are implementing the People’s Voice Survey (PVS), a nationally representative study designed to capture population perspectives on the healthcare system. This survey integrates feedback from both service users and non-users to assess critical indicators such as quality of care, system confidence, and accessibility. By gathering these insights, we aim to provide evidence that supports policy development, health system strengthening, and client-centered care.
Our research extends to policy engagement and knowledge translation. We actively collaborate with government agencies, academic institutions, and development partners to ensure that our findings are impactful and inform health interventions at all levels. To sustain our research and expand our initiatives, we actively pursue grant opportunities that align with our mission to enhance healthcare delivery. We continue to seek partnerships and funding to address emerging challenges in healthcare and drive innovation through implementation research.
