Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) is committed to fostering internationalization through the exchange of ideas and experiences within its academic community. As part of this commitment, the university maintains a policy requiring that a designated percentage of newly admitted students be international. Historically, the university has welcomed and graduated students from a diverse range of countries, including Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Botswana, Swaziland, Egypt, Tanzania, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and India. These alumni are now applying their acquired knowledge and skills across the globe. The university is officially listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDoMS) and enjoys international recognition from esteemed organizations such as the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) in the United States and the World Health Organization (WHO).

How to apply:

1. Undergraduate (Generic) Applicants

Applications for generic undergraduate programs are processed through the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). You can visit their website for more information (https://pus.nche.ac.mw)

2. Economic Fee Paying

All applications must be submitted through the online admission portal at https://admissions.kuhes.ac.mw.

3. Language Requirements

All KUHeS programmes are taught and assessed in English. International students are encouraged to learn basic Chichewa language, especially for clinical training, to communicate effectively with patients, guardians, and surrounding communities.

4. Visa Requirements for International Students

International students who require a Visa to enter the country should apply for an Entry Visa at the Malawian Embassy or High Commission in their country of residence immediately when a place has been offered. The Entry Visa allows one to legally stay in the country for 30 days during which time they will apply for a Study Permit. 5. Study Permit

A study permit is offered to all foreign nationals who intend to study on full time basis at a Malawian educational institution. The process of application is done while applicant is already in Malawi. The requirements for application of a study permit can be found on the Malawi Immigration website at https://epermit.gov.mw  and the steps are as follows: 

  • Complete a three-page application form in duplicate; 
  • Two recent passport-sized photos;
  • Authenticated photocopy of current passport showing photograph and personal details;
  • Authenticated photocopy of current visa (where applicable);
  • Letter of admission from Kamuzu University of Health Sciences;
  • Payment of a processing fee of $100.00 at the Immigration Department;
  • Medical report from the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences Clinic at a fee of $10, or any recognized health institute within Malawi;
  • Police clearance from Student’s country of origin;
  • Proof of funding to cover tuition fees, maintenance and incidental costs/Certification of Scholarship; 
  • Covering letter from the KUHeS Registry to the Immigration Department;

Students are encouraged to carry their passports with them throughout the immigration process and to keep safe the receipts of the processing fee of $100 for future use.

6. Medical Regulatory Bodies

It is essential to note that students are required to register with relevant professional regulatory bodies;

  1. Medical Council of Malawi for medical students
  2. Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi for Nursing students
