Course Description

This is a two-year Bachelor of Science in Neonatal Care programme (Post basic) which aims at producing safe, competent graduates who will respond to the national, global neonatal health needs and emerging issues while contributing to the provision of quality, equitable and accessible neonatal healthcare services to neonates, families, and communities.

  • Why (study) the programme

No similar programme exists in Malawi. The successful graduate will be able to deliver prompt, effective neonatal care services in Malawi. The programme emphasizes development of innovative neonatal care skills to address priority neonatal health needs and issues nationally and globally, considering local and regional developmental challenges. The programme also offers students with a firm foundation to pursue postgraduate studies and professional certifications required by industry.

  • Programme structure

The programme will be offered in two years and the candidates will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Neonatal Care. It is spread over four (4) semesters.  All modules are core. The mode of curriculum delivery shall be full time, face to face through lectures, individual and group assignments, individual and group presentations, tutorials, seminars and practical experience. To be considered for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Science in Neonatal Care, a learner shall have enrolled for modules for a period of two academic years and accumulate the required total number of 240 credits. 

  • Career prospects

Graduates from this program will work in neonatal care units in a variety of settings. They can also be employed in governmental and non-governmental organizations working on neonatal health care.

Entry Requirements

The entry point into the Bachelor of Science in Neonatal Care is level 2 (year three). Candidates should have the following qualification to be admitted into the bachelor’s degree (post basic) programme:

  1. Malawi School Certificate of Education or its equivalent with six (6) credits including English, Biology, Physical Science/General Science/Chemistry and Physics and Mathematics.
  2. University Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery or those with Diploma in nursing plus University certificate in Midwifery.
  3. Registered nurse midwife certificate
  4. Two-years’ experience working as a midwife in maternity unit; those working in neonatal nursery will have an added advantage.
