Doctor of Philosophy in Midwifery

Course Description

This is a blended postgraduate degree program by coursework and research (3-4 years). This PhD programme prepares graduates that will assume major positions in academia and Non-Governmental Organisations, advanced midwifery practice and research settings to expand Midwifery theory and practice base; and serve the nation and beyond through evidence-based practice and policy. A blended teaching/learning methodology informs the delivery of the programme and the elements of delivery in this programme are: On-campus, face-face teaching sessions for 4 weeks at the beginning and another 4 weeks at the end of each 18-week semester. Individual student learning using Module-based curriculum management system Periodic internet-based or video conferencing seminars.

Why (study) the programme

The doctoral programme in midwifery prepares expert health care professionals for leadership and evidence-based practice that will make a major impact on health care in the country and beyond and to further health care delivery at local, regional, and international levels.

Programme structure

The programme is offered full time or part time and uses a block release system. The programme is mainly divided into two parts namely: course work (including research practicum) and dissertation. Total Credits for the programme are 250.The following calculation shall be used for determining credit hours: 10 hours of theory (classroom as well as independent learner work) shall equal 1 credit. The programme will be offered in a minimum of four years on a full-time basis and six years on a part-time basis, comprising of two semesters in each year. The length of the programme may be extended for six months for full time students and one year for part time students in order for the student to complete the dissertation.  

Entry Requirements

Applicants to be admitted into this programme must have one of the following:

  1. A Master of Science Degree in Midwifery or other health-related programmes (e.g., Masters in Public Health).
  2. A minimum of two-year work experience after Masters Degree in a relevant field.

  3. References from one academic and two traceable professional referees attesting to the applicant’s academic and professional ability and potential;
  4. Personal goal statement that is congruent with the programme goals.
  5. Description of research concept that is congruent with the Malawi Health Research agenda.  
  6. A sample of scholarly work-preferably published work.
