Course Description

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a 3-4 year research-focused degree programme requiring students to develop research questions, conduct research and communicate the findings by writing thesis and publications. are research-focused degree programmes requiring students to develop research questions, conduct research and communicate the findings by writing thesis and publications. Thus, our PhD graduates are expected to develop in leaders in generating novel interventions or approaches to address health-related problems. You can register with Pharmacy Department if you want to specialize in Pharmaceutical analysis, Drug Development, Drug Discovery, Pharmacovigilance and pharmaceutical logistics and supply.

Entry Requirements

Masters degree in a relevant subject from any recognized university

How to Apply

Calls for applications for masters’ students are advertised all-year round on the university’s website, www.kuhes.ac.mw. Applications are made online through the following link : https://admissions.kuhes.ac.mw.

Applications are advertised twice a year.

Applications for this postgraduate programme should include:

1.    A completed postgraduate application form. 

2.    Sealed academic transcripts 

3.    Authenticated copies of academic certificates (by a lawyer, magistrate, or registrar of the awarding institution) 

4.    Authenticated copies of professional registration certificates where applicable 

5.    Letter of release from employers (if employed)

6.    Reference letters (one academic and one professional) 

A non-refundable application fee of MK10000.00 for Malawians and $30.00 for non-Malawians. Payment should be made to:

Applicants are strongly advised to have preliminary discussions with the relevant Heads of academic departments at KUHeS or Project Directors to enable matching the prospective student to supervisors or research groups and to develop research concepts before applying. Applicants without approved research concepts and supervisors will not be shortlisted.  Those applying for PhDs within the Department of Public Health should contact Professor Adamson Muula (hodpublichealth@medcol.mw). Those applying for PhDs within the Department of Health Systems and Policy should contact Dr Eric Umar (hodhealthsystems@kuhes.ac.mw). 

KUHeS accepts MPhil/PhD applications all year round but candidates can commence their studies in March and September each year.

Tuition and Fees

Per annum

Malawians: $3,300

Non-Malawians (SADC): $6,000

Non-Malawians (non-SADC): $8,000
