Master of Science Health Sciences- Antimicrobial Stewardship

Course Description

The two-year programme aims at creating a critical mass of Masters credentialed faculty and healthcare professionals with the requisite Biomedical, Clinical, Social Sciences and Policy related knowledge and skills to improve the capacity of health systems to manage infections and contain antimicrobial resistance. 

The program is designed to improve key infection related health statistics in Malawi and other countries in the SADC region by conducting research and generating evidence on the nature and extent of AMR with a view to designing context specific interventions for its containment. 

Programme structure

Students will undertake taught modules in the first academic year and part of the first semester of the second year.  The second semester of the second year will be dedicated to research. 

Career prospects

Graduates from the programs are expected to champion and set up antimicrobial stewardship programs in health care settings, conduct research in Antimicrobial stewardship and join academic institutions as Lecturers.

Entry Requirements

Candidates are eligible for admission into the MSc HS Antimicrobial Stewardship program if they have obtained the following:  MBBS, BSc in Pharmacy, Epidemiology, Pharmacology, Laboratory Sciences and Nursing. And first degree in any relevant scientific discipline.

Potential candidates may be invited for oral interviews.

Applications for this postgraduate programme should include:

  • A completed postgraduate application form. Application forms are available from the KUHeS registry office and can also be downloaded on its website www.kuhes.ac.mw
  • Sealed academic transcripts
  • Authenticated copies of academic certificates
  • Authenticated copies of professional registration certificates where applicable
  • Letter of release from employers (if employed)
  • Proof of funding (e.g. sponsorship agreement letter). Where applicants intend to sponsor themselves, copies of appropriate financial records must be submitted e.g. bank reference. Note that we have funding sponsorship for successful applicants in the surgical and O and G specialty disciplines
  • Reference letters (one academic and one professional)
  • All PhD applicants should submit a research concept which includes the following sections; Introduction, Objectives and Methodology.
  • A non-refundable application fee of MK10000.00 for Malawians and $30 for non-Malawians.

Malawians: $3,300

Non-Malawians (SADC): $6,000

Non-Malawians (non-SADC): $8,000
