Course Description
This University Certificate in Midwifery (UCM) is a programme offered to nurses who have a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and a University Diploma in Nursing who plan to study midwifery. The UCM uses a diverse approach that combines facility-based care, home based care and community-based approaches to cover broader dimensions of health promotion, prevention of complications, early recognition and management of factors to promote healthy transitions; and, use approaches that can promote individuals’ general, reproductive, maternal and neonatal health literacy.
The curriculum outline is generic. It is a full-time program delivered interactively through direct contact for both theory and clinical practice. The program focuses on learner’s development of essential competencies for maternal, neonatal and community care and service delivery including lifesaving skills. On successful completion of the program, the learner will obtain the status of a “midwife” on registration with the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi.
The ultimate goal of professional midwifery education is to produce graduates who are competent and will respond to the needs and emerging issues in the country while contributing to the health and quality of life of individuals and groups within different communities. With sufficient and verified competencies, midwives from this program will be able to create employment for others through their own practice. Graduates will be prepared to work in any setting.
This is a one-year basic midwifery program which will be covered in 4 semesters. It is competency-based, learner-centered and incorporates principles of self-directed learning and group processes in the teaching-learning experiences. The learner is central to her/his interaction with midwifery educators, preceptors/mentors, other practising midwives. The learner gets the opportunity to take control of the type, amount and direction of learning he/she needs for developing the expected competences.
The graduate from the programme is prepared to work in any government and private hospitals of any level, non-governmental organizations and can set their private practice.
