Master of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences

Course Description

Graduates from this programme will specialize in one of the following areas: Biomedical Forensic Science, Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Histopathology and Diagnostic Cytology, and Medical Microbiology. With specialized skills, graduates will be able to meet the needs of a clinical laboratory in an increasingly complex healthcare environment. The programme is therefore, an intervention to optimize the management of diseases in the context of accurate disease diagnosis and treatment monitoring with respect to research and evidence-based best practice.  This postgraduate programme provides general laboratory training, specialised skills to apply in disease diagnosis, laboratory management and research.  The programme is offered in two years through block release. Learners will undertake the core, majoring and elective modules in the first year while the whole of the second year will be dedicated to research projects and dissertation. 

  • Programme Structure

The programme offers opportunities for a full time MSc MLS which runs for two years spread over 4 semesters.  A minimum of 180 credits will have to be obtained as specified in the University of Malawi qualifications framework to complete the MSc MLS programme. The curriculum consists of four components; The majoring modules (40 Credits), the core modules (60 credits), elective modules (20 credits) and dissertation (60 credits).  Learners undertake the core modules in year one while the whole of the second year is dedicated to research projects and dissertation. Elective modules are also delivered in the first year to offer learners supplementary competencies in their areas of majoring

Entry Requirements

The minimum admission requirements for MSc MLS programme shall be:

  1. Bachelors of science degree in Medical Laboratory Science/Biomedical Science (Honors) from accredited university.

OR 

  1. Bachelors degree in relevant field obtained from an accredited university with at least one year relevant experience

  3. Authenticated copies of academic certificates (by a lawyer, magistrate, or registrar of the awarding institution) 
  4. Authenticated copies of professional registration certificates where applicable 
  5. Letter of release from employers (if employed)
  6. Reference letters (one academic and one professional)
