Course Description

This is a two -year full time competency-based programme delivered through direct contact for both theory and clinical practice. Mentorship during clinical attachment will be provided by nursing educators, preceptors and mentors to ensure that the learner acquires clinical competencies in the management of clients with mental health and psychiatric disorders/conditions. On successful completion of the programme, the learner will obtain the status of ‘’nurse’’ on registration with the appropriate registering body.

In this programme, the learners will first be introduced to basic nursing science relevant to nursing practice. the second part of the programme will focus on mental health and psychiatric care of clients. Each of these components has clinical placement aligned with theoretical content.

Aims of the programme:

The programme aims to enable learners to 

  1. acquire knowledge, skills, attributes and behaviours that are essential to practice as a competent and accountable registered mental health psychiatric nurse 
  2. Provide comprehensive promotive and preventive evidence-based mental health care to individuals, families and communities in various settings.

Entry Requirements

Applicants to be admitted into the Bachelor of science in mental health-psychiatric nursing programme should be registered to practice by nurses and midwives’ council of Malawi, and have any of the following qualifications from Malawi national council of higher education {NCHE} accredited institutions including 2 years’ experience of practice in their field:

  • Malawi school certificate of education or its equivalent with 6 credits including English, physical science /general science, mathematics and biology.

University diploma in:

Nursing

Nursing and midwifery

Mental health-psychiatric nursing

Community health nursing

Other relevant nursing disciplines

Duly completed application forms together with proof of payment of a non-refundable application fee of K12, 000.00 for Malawian candidates and U$25 for international applicants should be sent to the same address. Applicants should attach a deposit slip as proof of payment of an appropriate application fee.
