Course Description

The Bachelor of Science in midwifery- post-basic programme is a two- year full time mature entry. The programme is designed to meet the current and emerging midwifery and reproductive health needs of Malawians, improve the quality of Midwifery care and contribute to the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity rates in Malawi. The programme empowers graduate midwives to promote safe motherhood, ensuring proper decision making in provision of midwifery care. This is an effective approach to meeting the reproductive health needs of all families and communities.

  • Why (study) the programme

The aim of the Bachelor of Science in Midwifery (Post Basic) programme is to prepare graduates to assume responsibilities as competent midwives in providing promotive, preventive and holistic care informed by available evidence, who can make independent midwifery decisions, in the areas of midwifery practice and assume the role of provider, educator, leader in a clinical and community health setting/institutions of midwifery education.

  • Programme structure

This is a two-year programme, spread over four (4) semesters. All modules are core.

  • Career prospects

The candidates for this programme are already in employment. The programme enables them to upgrade the level of midwifery to a bachelor’s level which gives them the opportunity to work in any setting including setting up their own practice.

Entry Requirements

The entry point into the programme is level 2 (year three). Candidates should have the following qualifications to be admitted into the bachelor’s degree (post basic) programme:

  1. Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent with six (6) credits including English, Biology, Physical Science and Mathematics.
  2. University/College Diploma in Nursing from colleges accredited by the National Council of Higher Education.
  3. Registered nurse/midwife

Duly completed application forms together with proof of payment of a non-refundable application fee of K12, 000.00 for Malawian candidates and U$25 for international applicants should be sent to the same address. Applicants should attach a deposit slip as proof of payment of an appropriate application fee.
