Since the inception of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree programme at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) in 2019, there have been several visits by dental academics and clinicians from outwith Malawi to provide additional teaching support for the local staff team. Restorative Dentistry is a core component of the BDS degree and for much of the content it is important that the teaching is face-to-face, as it is a very practical discipline that does not lend itself to on-line teaching.

From 13th – 17th July 2026 a team of six Restorative Dentistry specialists visited KUHeS:

Four were from the University of Glasgow, UK, one from the University of Liverpool ,UK and one from the University of Western Cape, SA. The teaching was delivered in multiple formats:

It was especially gratifying that two of the first cohort of Malawian trained dentists, who have now completed their internships, participated as teachers under supervision of the Flying Faculty members.

In addition, discussions were held with MEIRU, the Blantyre-Blantyre Laboratory and the KUHeS Department of Public Health, which identified several potential areas for collaborative oral health research.
