Course Description

Two year programme

The overall goal of the programme is to provide equitable and accessible healthcare services to individuals and communities. The department believes that at programme completion learners should be competent practitioners and possess the potential to positively influence the health of individuals and populations and work in collaboration with other health care professionals.  

The department believes that the programme should be vocational and contain sound knowledge, skills and appropriate attitudes to support contemporary adult health care delivery. In particular the curriculum is outcome based and supports the development of clinical expertise and lead to improved predictability of patient/population needs with a strong focus on quality enhancement of nursing and midwifery care.  

Aims of the programme

•    Apply the nursing process in the implementation of health care services both in an independent and collaborative role.

•    Synthesize principles and theoretical concepts from the humanities and the natural, behavioral and nursing sciences; for application in the provision of quality adult nursing care.

•    Apply concepts and principles of management in planning, implementation and evaluation of quality nursing services 

•    Collaborate with intersectoral and interdisciplinary teams for optimal health of the community.

Conduct research, interpret and utilize research findings in the improvement of adult health care services.

•    Utilize scientific knowledge gained from human physiology in the understanding of the pathophysiology of disease processes

Entry Requirements

Must have the following qualifications:

  1. MSCE/O-Level credits in Biology, Physical Science, English and Mathematics.
  2.  University diploma in Nursing 
  3. Be a Registered Nurse/ Midwife 
  1. In addition all candidate are expected to have at least 2 years of work experience in either nursing or midwifery at RN level
  1. Applicants with distinction and credit passes in their previous academic records shall have an added advantage.

Duly completed application forms together with proof of payment of a non-refundable application fee of K12, 000.00 for Malawian candidates and U$25 for international applicants should be sent to the same address. Applicants should attach a deposit slip as proof of payment of an appropriate application fee.
