Mr. Wilson Kumwenda
Governance Package Lead
Improve the effectiveness of governance and management systems at KUHeS.
Conducting policy awareness sessions and stakeholder engagement initiatives
Strengthened governance structures, improved financial management, and effective policy implementation.
The Governance Component of the Scottish Strategic Partnership at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) played a pivotal role in strengthening institutional systems during the 2025–2026 financial year. Several key policies were developed, including the Cyber Security Policy, which establishes a proactive risk-based framework to safeguard institutional operations and reputation, and the Staff Training and Development Policy, which provides a standardized approach to capacity building and equitable access to training opportunities.
Additional governance outputs included the Examination Policy, the Student Grievance Handling Procedure, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the Academic Registry, with automation planned to improve operational efficiency. Complementary initiatives such as the Financial Manual, Communication Guidelines, and the development of a Policy Awareness Platform further enhanced compliance, transparency, and institutional integrity.
Curriculum review and accreditation support were another major focus area. The Governance team facilitated the five-year review of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) curriculum, supported the accreditation of several programmes within the School of Nursing and Maternal Health, and coordinated the editing, formatting, and printing of 26 curricula across KUHeS schools in preparation for submission to the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). These efforts ensured that academic programmes meet national standards, align with KUHeS regulations, and reflect best practices in higher education.
Beyond policy and curriculum development, the Governance Component also invested in capacity building and strategic engagement. Staff participated in the Theory of Change development process for the KUHeS Strategic Plan to ensure alignment with long-term institutional priorities. International engagement included participation in the Times Higher Education Africa Universities Summit in Nairobi (March 2026), which strengthened global visibility and partnerships, and the Project Management Professional Masterclass in Dar es Salaam (March 2026), which enhanced project management and monitoring skills.
Locally, a workshop on Examination Moderation Procedures held in Blantyre (March 2026) equipped TLDC staff with practical skills in assessment design, standard setting, and academic quality assurance. Collectively, these initiatives demonstrate the Governance Component’s contribution to building resilient governance systems, enhancing academic quality, and positioning KUHeS as a forward-looking institution. By integrating policy development, curriculum accreditation, staff training, and international engagement, the partnership continues to strengthen KUHeS’s governance framework while expanding its regional and global footprint.
