Nursing

The School of Nursing (SON) is one of five schools in the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS).  The SON offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes which are aimed at producing competent healthcare professionals with advanced requisite knowledge and skills in clinical practice, outreach, research, leadership, consultancy and other relevant skills. The SON is committed to excellence by fostering a conducive environment which enhances intellectual growth and professional socialization. The School contributes to the provision of holistic healthcare services in a variety of settings to address the healthcare needs of the Malawi population and beyond for the overall development of a healthy society. 

The faculty in the SON are active researchers, with local, national and international collaborations. The five departments in the SON include; Adult Health Nursing, Child Health Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Mental Health Nursing and Nursing and Midwifery Education

Community Health Nursing Department

Department Overview 

The department of Community health Nursing aims at producing highly competent practitioners to provide holistic and comprehensive health services to individuals, families, groups and communities. It offers two undergraduate degrees programmes, and one Masters degrees programme

Mental Health Nursing Department
Department overview

The department of Mental Health Nursing is currently offering 4 programmes. It has two undergraduate degrees programmes, which are for Direct entry and Mature entry levels. It also has two Masters degrees programmes one for Public Metal health care and the other is in Mental health and Psychiatric Nursing. It aims at producing highly competent practitioners to provide holistic mental health services

Research in the department 

The Support, Comprehensive Care and Empowerement of people with Psychosocial Disabilities (SUCCEED -Malawi Project) project is housed in the department of mental health nursing while members of the department are also involved in other research projects.

He holds a Msc. (Gerontology) from Southampton University (UK)

He is a Co-Principal Investigator in Psychosis Recovery Orientation in Malawi (PROMISE)

  1. Ditress Nyirongo a lecturer with Bachelor of Science in Mental health and a Masters in Community Health Nursing.
  1. Japhet Myaba a lecturer with Bachelor of Science Degree in Clinical Psychiatry and a Master’s in Public Health.

Nursing and Midwifery Education Department 
Department overview

The nursing education department exists to primarily prepare health professionals such as nurses and midwives, in their role as educators of patients, and clients in health care facilities and communities as well as educators of students in health institutions for those who choose a career in nursing education. 

To achieve this objective, the department offers educational foundations courses necessary to prepare nurses, midwives and other health professionals as innovative and effective educators. The department also offers specialized programmes in nursing and midwifery education at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. The advanced knowledge and skills gained is necessary for them to engage in the effective teaching/learning, research, scholarly and leadership roles in nursing and midwifery education and inter-professional health care education practice.

Research

The department of nursing education supports high-impact research and innovations to drive not only the department’s but also the university’s agenda of becoming a center of excellence. It is in this spirit that the department contains a vibrant and diverse community of researchers, committed to producing outstanding research that enriches the praxis of nursing and midwifery education. Much of our most innovative research straddle a number of thematic areas including, Clinical teaching, Curriculum development, Design and evaluation, education leadership and administration, testing and measurement inter alia.

Adult Health Nursing Department

Department of Adult Health Nursing is one the departments in the School of Nursing which offers programmes in both undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students. The department actively participates in training students to provide service and conduct research in the field of Adult health nursing. 

The overall goal of the programmes in the department is to provide equitable and accessible nursing and midwifery healthcare services to individuals and communities. The Department believes that at programme completion nursing and midwifery students should be competent practitioners. The students will therefore possess the potential to positively influence the health of individuals and populations in collaboration with other health care professionals.  

The curriculum is outcome based and supports the development of nursing and midwifery clinical expertise congruent with the Malawi Ministry of Health plan for health and Malawi Vision 2063.

Child Health Nursing Department

 Department Overview 

Department of Child Health Nursing is one the departments in the School of Nursing which focuses on nursing care of children, both well and sick in both undergraduate and postgraduate Nursing students. The department actively participates in training students to provide service for the well and sick children and do research in the field of child health nursing. Well established skills laboratory equipped with models, mannequins, instruments, and audio-visual aids facilitate the teaching and learning process. 

VISION 

The vision of department of Child Health Nursing is to train highly competent nurses who will provide culturally appropriate nursing care to well and sick children. Develop students with appropriate knowledge, skill and attitude in nursing education, administration and research through expert leadership. 

Mission 

To prepare nursing students to develop in-depth knowledge, skill and right attitude to function as child health nurses who provide holistic nursing care to the well and sick at in given setting. To prepare students to conduct nursing research in the field of Child Health Nursing. To encourage undergraduate and postgraduate students to be competent as nurse educator and administrator globally.
